Project: Eating Through Disaster: Food Insecurity in Puerto Rico
Yaritza Sánchez Silva & Bryan Ramos Romero
“Eating Through Disaster: Food Insecurity in Puerto Rico” is a bilingual zine created by students at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez as part of their contribution to the Humanities Action Lab exhibition Climates of Inequalities. The zine draws from oral histories archived at the newly inaugurated Oral History Lab @UPRM—which was funded by a Digital Humanities grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities—to address the archipelago’s food dependence on the United States while exploring possible avenues for food sovereignty. This zine targets the general public of Puerto Rico who are often unaware of the historical influences impacting Puerto Rico’s food security because of a multitude of social, economic, and political reasons. The zine simultaneously provides various models for creating sustainable food practices at home and in the community.
